Understanding your subject matter.

Professional photographers are both historians and story tellers. Each frame that is exposed takes a snapshot of time in a split second. The way the shot has been framed and composed, tells a story. How the image has been setup will determine what that story is.

The story is key!

When a client engages a commercial photographer and briefs them on a project, there will be two aspects of the brief that the photographer will receive, either consciously or unconsciously, from the client. One will be the subject matter or objects in the environment and the other is what I like to call…The subject.

For me, as an industrial photographer, the subject or story may be “Heat”. The subject is a about hot environments. So, we work on shooting that person, machine or even that building (subject matter) in such a manner that tells the story of them being in a “Hot environment”.

Now this leads me into understanding your…

Subject Matter!

Good commercial photographers will research and understand your subject matter in advance. To begin to create an image that tells a story well, you must first understand the subject matter.

In the world of Industrial Photography there are only two ways to fully understand your subject matter well. Firstly, training will be the most important. Without training such as height access or a confined space ticket, you can’t tick off the second way to understand your subject matter…”Experience”!

Once we understand the “Matter”, we can manipulate and tell the story.

If you are looking to engage an Industrial Photographer, a videographer or simply a commercial photographer, look deeper into the photography portfolio and the experience. Especially if you value safety on a photoshoot.

Working in industrial areas can take years to fully understand from an industrial photographer perspective. The environments are dangerous, uncomfortable and often lack room to move.

Working with an experienced industrial photographer who has the training, experience and understanding of a range of industrial environments will give you piece of mind that they understand your subject matter.

This then leaves them to focus on the subject…safely!
